Camphill Village Minnesota Capital Planning

Capital Planning for the 2022-2023 Year

This is an unusual year for all of us with so many global and financial factors coming together to create multiple challenges. As in recent years, we are only focusing on what is most necessary in renovation and equipment replacement.

Phase 1

Farm Roads/Food Processing

Replacing Walk-in Cooler and Freezer at the Yellow Shed $40,000

Our walk-in cooler and freezer are twenty-five years old and have reached the limits of functionality. The freezer and cooler are a vital part of the sustainability of our year-round food supply, keeping our vegetables/fruits/meats and other food fresh for ready use, for sale and for food processing for the fall and winter months.

Culvert Work on Marl Spring Road $8,362

Water is eroding part of Marl Spring Road which connects both sides of the farm. Once the culvert is fixed, we can stop any damage (including anything that could become more permanent) in the future.

Climate Change Fund $25,000

In 2022, we have set up a climate change fund totaling $25,000 to ensure any unexpected costs related to extreme weather (which could impact the safety and security of our village) are addressed when the need arises. We have already used 2/3 of this $25,000 fund to support the reconstruction of another vital culvert that was necessary to repair before the farm road became impassable for our farmers with machinery for field work and our cattle to move to new pastures.

       Total of Phase 1                               $73,362

Phase II

Housing Renovations

Our houses are between 25 to 62 years old. Thanks to the community’s support, we have kept up with the pace of renovations every year before safety issues and increased damage with increased costs add up. This year all our remaining house renovation projects are small because of this steady pace of maintenance.

Floor Replacement Total $6,200

Flooring replacement is needed in one room of both Marl Spring ($1,100) Prairie Wind ($2,350), and the front stairs at Prairie Wind ($2,750).

Prairie Wind Air Conditioning $3,000

Prairie Wind is the only main building on the other side of the farm that has air conditioning during the hot summer months. The main floor air conditioning will complete this house as a place for the people working on the farm as well as its residents to have a cool respite.

Lean-to/Safeguarding Equipment $20,939

A lean-to must be attached to our hay shed to secure farm equipment and ensure the equipment’s workability through weather extremes.

Total of Phase II $30,139

Grand Total: $103,501
